Greg W. MacKenzie

Managing Partner, Litigation

Greg has been a partner at Hurley Toevs Styles Hamblin & Panter PA since 2008. He was formerly a partner of the trust and estate litigation firm of Popejoy & MacKenzie PC. Greg is a graduate of the Syracuse University College of Law and was admitted to practice before the New Mexico courts in 1993 and has been working as a litigation lawyer since that time. Since 1997, Greg has devoted virtually all of his practice to representing clients in probate, estate and trust litigation. This includes representing clients who are contesting or defending the validity of wills, trusts and other estate planning documents and those who are involved in litigation over the administration of estates and trusts. His cases frequently involve allegations of breach of fiduciary duty and the construction of controlling instruments such as wills and trusts.

Greg also frequently handles litigation in contested complex guardianships and conservatorships. He has served as guardian ad litem for incapacitated adults involved in those types of proceedings. Greg has received his certificate (2005) from the UNM School of Law mediation course and has served as a mediator in cases involving contested trusts, probates and difficult guardianships and conservatorships. Gregory is a well-known speaker, presenter and adjunct professor (at UNM law school) in trust and estate litigation.

Greg is the chair of the Trust and Estate Division of the Real Property and Trust Section of the New Mexico State Bar and the Chair Elect of that Section for the 2018 year. Greg has been recognized as AV-Rated by Martindale and was elected a fellow to the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel in 2010. He is an active member of the Fiduciary Litigation Committee of that College. Greg has been recognized as Best Lawyer of the Year (2017, 2018 and 2019) by Best Lawyers.

Outside of his professional life, Greg is an avid photographer. His work has been selected for several awards and his landscape photography is featured on this website.

Lalita Devarakonda, Esq.

Senior Associate

Lalita has practiced in both private and public sectors including the federal and state court systems in New Mexico for the past 18 years.  Specifically, Lalita served as a Law Clerk in the United States District Court, District of New Mexico, as a Staff Attorney for the New Mexico Court of Appeals, the Civil Division with the Second Judicial District Court and as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Albuquerque. Lalita has also practiced in the private sector representing both corporate, and individual clients, in all aspects of complex civil litigation as well as several appellate matters. Lalita holds degrees in Accounting and Law from India. Lalita earned her Juris Doctorate, Magna Cum Laudefrom the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2000. Lalita has been recognized as AV-rated by Martindale and was the recipient of the prestigious honor of being Order of Coif, as well as the Frederick M. Hart Prize for Excellence in Commercial Law. She was also the Lead Articles Editor for the Natural Resources Journal. Lalita joined the Trust and Estate Litigation Department in 2016 where she handles both simple and complex litigation and is presently a Senior Associate in the Department. Lalita enjoys spending time with her family and her hobbies include exercise, cooking, and traveling.

Vincent M. Haslam, Esq.


Vincent M. Haslam practices law in the areas of estate planning, business planning including mergers and acquisitions, and taxation. He attended the University of New Mexico for his Bachelor’s degree and law degree, and attended the University of Washington for an LL.M. in taxation. He frequently gives lectures to professional groups in the areas of taxation, business law, and estate planning. He is the 2019 chair of the Taxation Section for the New Mexico State Bar, and also serves on the board of directors for the Real Property, Trust, and Estate Section for the New Mexico State Bar. Mr. Haslam is fluent in Spanish. When he is not working he enjoys spending time with his family, baking bread, and running.

Manny S. Talwar, Esq.


Manny Talwar practices in the area of trust and estate planning as well as business planning and taxation. He attended Hofstra University School of Law and also received an LL.M. in Taxation from Golden Gate University. He has experience working in large international public accounting firms such as PwC and Moss Adams in addition to smaller local public accounting firms. In addition to public accounting, he was an in-house attorney for an Albuquerque healthcare IT start-up company for 5+ years. He is a member of the State Bar of New Mexico and the AICPA, in addition to serving as a board member for a few local non-profit organizations. Manny is conversational in Punjabi and enjoys spending time with family, walking the dog, gardening and playing tennis.

Nita Garcia


NITA–Anita (“Nita”) is a seventh-generation Native New Mexican and has worked in the legal field for over thirty years, the last 20 of which have been working alongside Greg in Trust and Estate litigation. Nita manages all paralegal functions for the Trust and Estate Litigation Department, including without limitation interviewing new clients, filing pleadings and managing document production and discovery in heavy litigation files. She has three children and is “Nania” to three grand-children who she has introduced to her love of the New Mexico mountains, backpacking and camping. She is active in the community as a hospice volunteer as well as in her local church.

Suzanne Marks

Legal Assistant

With a degree in Community Health Education, Suzanne spent 2 ½ decades working to improve health and prevent disease through organizations such as the University of New Mexico, Kaiser Permanente (Northern California) and Native American Professional Parent Resources.  Suzanne joined the Hurley Firm Trust and Estates Litigation Team in 2016 as a Legal Assistant. Suzanne is often the first voice that callers hear when contacting the Litigation Department. She is largely responsible for scheduling, file maintenance and coordinates the speaking engagements for the lawyers in the Department. When Suzanne isn’t at work (and sometimes when she is), she’s often accompanied by her Labrador Retriever, Tootsie. Suzanne enjoys spending time with her siblings and looks for every opportunity to dote on her son, his wife, and her grandchildren.
